Description
The languages of dance and the visual arts share the same terms: line, gesture, rhythm, movement, weight and space. However, these terms do not mean quite the same thing to a dancer as they do to a visual artist. Take Edgar Degas, the artist most well-known for his depiction of dancers and movement; his magnificent images do not reveal a deep understanding of ballet in its own right. Indeed, unless one has been a dancer, it is likely impossible to know dancers’ intentions, gestures or lines, let alone the feeling in the body, and its perception of space. In my work, I hope reconcile the dancer’s understanding of line, gesture, and movement, in three-dimensional space, with the formal language of visual art.
